Therapeutic Life Skills Program
Welcome to Hummingbird's Therapeutic Life Skills Program, specially designed for neurodivergent young adults aged 12 and older!
Our program provides both individual and supplemental group opportunities to improve home and community living skills in a therapist-led environment. These essential skills go beyond basic daily tasks and include:
- Communication and social skills
- Job exploration and preparation
- Meal coordination and preparation
- Money management
- Home maintenance (cleaning and laundry)
Which Teens/Young Adults Would Benefit from This Program?
- Those who have “aged out” of other therapeutic services/clinics
- Those who are going through a transition process
- Those who are having difficulties increasing their independence at home, in the community, and/or at school
- Those who could benefit from increased opportunities to engage in social groups
- Those looking for a multi-disciplinary approach and increased family training/involvement
Personalized Approach
After a comprehensive evaluation and reviewing your child's IEP (if applicable), our team of occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists, feeding therapists, and counselors will tailor the program to chart the path for each adolescent’s developmental progression. We also incorporate compensatory (or adapted) strategies as needed to assist in reaching goals with regular communications to families on how to transfer skills to the home environment.
All participants start with individual therapy sessions, which allows us to get to know them better and practice skills for group participation or community based activities. We use this time to gather the information we need to support your child in exploring these supplemental opportunities.
Another important aspect of this program is its family-centered care approach. Regular educational sessions with guardians will be scheduled to address the needs of the entire family and ensure successful carryover to the home environment, ultimately leading to more meaningful growth and progress for your child as they navigate these transitional years.
Group Sessions
Our small group format provides a supportive, structured environment where participants can practice their verbal and non-verbal communication skills in a controlled setting. These therapist-guided interactions help build confidence in developmentally appropriate social environments, giving the participants the opportunity to practice emotional regulation, navigate conflicts, and improve social-emotional skills. This collaborative approach fosters personal growth and prepares participants for increased independence and autonomy.
