Social Language Playgroups
While one-on-one private sessions are very important to help a child’s social-emotional and communicative skills, we find that there is no better situation to encourage carry-over from a private setting into social situations as social playgroups.
At Hummingbird Pediatric Therapies, we don’t advertise playgroups and then have kids sign up for them. We let the children’s needs drive the formation of these groups. We take special care in putting these groups together so that one child’s strength is another ones weakness and vice-versa.
One of the main goals of groups is to empower the child to use his or her communication skills effectively and appropriately with other children. We like to call it the “playground politics” of childhood. By this we mean the social-emotional side to communication…turn taking, making good decisions, understanding feelings and being able to communicate with words when they feel happy, sad, angry, jealous etc. versus communicating with temper tantrums or just becoming very shy in these situations.
Our groups range in size from 2-6 kids and are always ongoing. Contact us today to see if we have a current group that your child could benefit from!
